The Grateful Dead were an American rock band formed in 1965 in Palo Alto, California. The band was known for their eclectic style, which fused elements of rock, blues, jazz, folk, country, bluegrass, rock and roll, gospel, reggae, and world music with psychedelia; for their differentiated live performances centered around improvisation and for a devoted fan base, known as "Deadheads".

The Grateful Dead were one of the most successful touring acts of all time, despite having only one top-40 single in their 30-year career. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and a recording of their May 8, 1977 performance at Cornell University's Barton Hall was added to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress in 2012.

The Grateful Dead were founded in the San Francisco Bay Area amid the rise of the counterculture of the 1960s. The founding members were Jerry Garcia (lead guitar, vocals), Bob Weir (rhythm guitar, vocals), Ron "Pigpen" McKernan (keyboards, harmonica, vocals), Phil Lesh (bass, vocals), and Bill Kreutzmann (drums). With the exception of McKernan, who died in 1973, and Hart, who took time off from 1971 to 1974, the core of the band stayed together for its entire 30-year history.

The Grateful Dead's music was known for its improvisational nature. The band would often start a song with a basic structure, but would then allow the music to evolve and change as they played. This allowed for a unique and unpredictable live experience, and it helped to create a strong bond between the band and their

fans.

The Grateful Dead's fan base was known as "Deadheads". Deadheads were known for their loyalty and dedication to the band. They would often travel long distances to see the band perform, and they would often trade and collect bootleg recordings of the band's live shows.

The Grateful Dead disbanded in 1995 after the death of Jerry Garcia. However, the band's music and legacy continue to live on. There have been several spin-off bands featuring one or more core members of the Grateful Dead, and the band's music continues to be enjoyed by fans around the world.
