Gabriel said the "cheap organ sound" comes from an expensive Prophet-5 synth, which he regards as "an old warhorse" sound tool.

Johnson and won nine MTV Video Music Awards in 1987, including Video of the Year, Best Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Editing, Best Special Effects, Best Choreography, and Best Overall Performance. It is considered one of the greatest music videos of all time.
